Cruises and boat holidays are becoming more popular, but in order for it to be remembered as an enjoyable experience and not an unpleasant nightmare, it is necessary keep some rules in mind.

Contrary to what you might think, the greatest enemy while sailing is not adverse weather conditions but living together on board! We at Over The Sail know this well: the boat tests even the closest-knit relationships.

On the other hand, up to eight people plus crew living together in the physical space of a studio flat would be complex under any circumstances.

Reconciling different personalities and conflicting desires in a small space is not easy but it is possible.

Avoid taking over the common areas with personal items that could become a hindrance during critical moments. To simplify this, just choose what to put in your bag carefully and avoid unnecessary items. Bear in mind that you will almost always be barefoot and in a swimming costume on the boat!

You should never sulk. An angry or unhappy person on board creates a bad mood for everyone and ruins the cruise. You may get irritated by something, in which case the best thing to do is to clarify it immediately, apologise if necessary and clear the air.

We must not push each other to the edge by fighting! Some people react badly to their first experience on a boat because of seasickness, other health problems or personal reasons. If this happens, don't worry about what the others think, simply ask the Skipper to stop, if possible, and disembark. You can then go home independently without any further suffering.

Nothing on board should be monopolised by a single person and everyone must be able to learn to manoeuvre the sails or to be at the helm, if they wish. As such, the common areas and on-board equipment must also be accessible to everyone.
